Fundraising incentives, more parking on tap for Southwest Florida event

ESTERO, Fla. (Feb. 14, 2011) – With just four weeks until the 2011 Southwest Florida Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, individual and team registrations are ahead of the same time last year. Additionally, the Southwest Florida Affiliate is offering more fundraising incentives and more parking options to make participating in the March 12 event at Coconut Point Mall easier and more enjoyable.

At this time last year, 2,672 individuals and 264 teams had registered their participation. This year’s Race for the Cure already has 2,915 individuals and 297 teams registered.  Last year, more than 12,000 supporters were present at the Race. The event raised more than $915,000 which helped the Southwest Florida Affiliate make grants of $821,166 to 11 local non-profit organizations that provide education, screening, treatment and support in the fight against breast cancer.

To accommodate the expected number of participants, parking has been increased to include the lot north of the Sun Trust Bank on U.S. 41 directly across from the mall entrance. This will increase parking by 700 spaces. Teams and individual participants are also encouraged to carpool making parking and locating team members more streamlined.

The individual who raises the most funds by March 31 using this Facebook application will win a roundtrip airline ticket anywhere in the continental U.S. from American Airlines/American Eagle. Those who register after Feb. 25 can get their packets at designated pick-up sites or on race day.

The Race is a sanctioned 5K event that also includes a non-competitive 5K run/walk and a one-mile fun run/walk. Seventy five percent of all net proceeds from the Southwest Florida Race for the Cure stay in Southwest Florida and 25 percent of proceeds are given to national research programs.
