2012 Star Spangled Bonita kicks off with traditional bed race

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. (June 18, 2012) – In a time honored July 4th tradition, the 2012 Star Spangled Bonita event will kick off on Wednesday, July 4 with an old-fashioned bed race. The Bonita Springs tradition dates back to the childhood days of Frank Liles and Mayor Ben Nelson. Sponsored by the Bonita Springs YMCA, the bed race will begin promptly at 4 p.m. along Old U.S. 41.

The bed race event is open to the first ten individuals or businesses that sign up. The cost to enter is $25 and the proceeds benefit the YMCA’s camp scholarships. Participants must be at least 18 years old and are asked to create teams of five, allowing for one person to be situated on the mattress. Beds must be twin size and should be decorated in the Fourth of July theme. Prizes will be awarded to the winners and may include YMCA memberships and hosted birthday parties.

Following the bed race, the annual Star Spangled Bonita event will be in full swing. The event will feature children’s activities, entertainment provided by Wildfire and Deb & the Dynamics followed by a laser light show and fireworks display.

To register for the bed race event or for more information, please contact the YMCA at 239.221.7560 or Jack Brown at [email protected] or call 239.325.7866.
